This last order week I had the opportunity to attend a workshop given by Gabriel Pacheco in the city of Valladolid . The Boys in the Pencil Agency undertook to bring him to Spain for the Light Area. Surely we have learned a lot of its concepts, techniques and ideas. A great big ones. Many thank you very much Angel and Sandra. A pleasure to see all the people from other years, and a pleasure to meet lots of new people. It was an unforgettable experience. Many thank you very much for sharing with me. Biocarnaval III: trophic cascade or top-down regulation

With this post I join the third Biology carnival, hosted this time by Pakozoico . The theme of this edition are trophic relationships, so I go there with an example of how human influence can load an entire ecosystem, through trophic relationships.

The example of the cascade effect that I want to show takes place in the North Pacific, particularly in kelp forests that exist or should exist in the shallow bottoms and illuminated American Pacific coast north .

The kelps are brown algae of the Laminariales order, comprising several families that contain, among others, gender Nereocystis and Macrocystis present on the coast North American Pacific. In shallow water, low-temperature form what is known as "kelp forest" and growing at up to half a meter a day, reaching heights of several tens of meters. Due to its large size provide a structural framework to develop a complete ecosystem around: epiphytic species growing on its surface, algae with lower light requirements, or parasitic algae, grow in their shade; marine invertebrates like sea urchins, starfish and various species of herbivorous gastropods feed on kelp and other associated algae and filter feeding shellfish and other animals find their food detritus in waters nutritious kelp forests provide. You can see the otters are solitary in top of the scheme. That basically means that are higher level predators of the ecosystem, no one eats, go (except some occasional shark.) The intimate relationship between the presence of otters and health forests of kelp (urchins by) was studied and recognized by the otter reintroduction projects to be conducted off the coast of Vancouver (Dr. Jane Watson at the beginning of the 90) and Alaska and the Aleutian Islands (Estes and Duggins, 1995) after the treaty was signed guard.

The Otters have relationship with the kelp by urchins is what is known as a trophic cascade , or top-down regulation : a progression of indirect effects of predators across successively lower trophic levels. Or what is the same, the presence or absence of otters has indirect effect on the survival of kelp forests through the control they exert over the sea urchins to eat. The best description of New York that I have read so far, from the book "American on Purpose: the unlikely adventures of an unlikely patriot " of Craig Ferguson. The guy is a presenter on American television, a type "Buenafuente" though comparisons are odious, and in this case is the outright Buenafuente worse off. The question is who wrote a book that explains why he emigrated from Scotland to America, as he left his addiction to drugs and alcohol as he became the host of Late Show presents today. It seems simple, the traditional famous book "that does not add much, but it is not. Reading is fun, exciting, sincere, and is well written. And among the good things in the book is this description that the author first visited New York, as a teenager. Hence the left:

Now that ... Love That Was at first sight. I loved it then and I love it still. Even now, overloaded with sanitized bullshit Trump glass towers and condo-yuppie pseudoculture, it is still a complete mindfuck. As a Scottish schoolboy that first time, New York City was the Big Rock Candy Mountain. It was smoggy, bright-hot, filthy and wonderful. It was Disneyland, Oz and fucking Jupiter. It was noise and smell and lights and people looking like they were in a movie. Fat cabdrivers chewing wet cigars and talking about the exotic sport of baseball, unbelievably sexy women in outfits that Scottish girls would not have dared to wear even on a carnival float. Individuals wearing colors I had only ever seen on soccer uniforms or sectarian parades. The people themselves were different colors. Black people, brown people. (...) We took the elevator to the eighty-six floor of the Empire State Building and looked across Manhattan. North to Harlem, east to the river and all the airplanes landing and taking off in Queens, west to the Hudson and south to the colossal new World Trade Center towers.

We took a ferry to Liberty Island and climbed to the head of the statue. (...) We stood in Liberty's crown and looked out over the harbor, as the guide droned on through the heat about the poor and unwashed masses yearning to be free.

I made a promise to myself and I told my dad.
